Booster Club Fundraising Ideas That Actually Work

Updated Oct 6, 2026

Every booster club asks the same question each spring: what should the club run next year? This section answers it one fundraiser at a time. Each idea gets its own page with the same structure, so a board can compare two ideas side by side and decide in one meeting.

The rules of fundraising, as opposed to the ideas, live in the Fundraising section. A board should read Fundraising Rules for Booster Clubs before adopting any idea here, because several popular fundraisers run into the private benefit problem, sales tax, or state raffle law.

Before choosing one, read the fundraising rules and your state's raffle and gaming rules.

Idea pages are being written

Each fundraiser will get its own page, rated by typical net, volunteer hours, lead time, season, and the rules that apply. Pages are listed here as they are published, in these categories:

How Each Idea Is Rated

Every idea page reports the same facts:

Attribute What it means
Typical net What a club of the stated size usually clears after costs
Volunteer hours Total hours across planning, the event, and cleanup
Lead time Weeks from decision to money in the bank
Best season When it works, and when it collides with other asks
Repeatable Whether it works every year or only once
Rules that apply Sales tax, raffle law, food permits, district approval, private benefit
Works best for Program types and club sizes

Net figures are ranges drawn from published club reports and vendor disclosures, not promises. A club’s own results depend on its community, its volunteer base, and how many other asks parents receive the same month.

Categories

Membership and Direct Giving

Membership drives, tiered sponsorships, annual giving letters, pledge campaigns, matching gifts. The highest return per volunteer hour and the foundation of a healthy budget. See also Running a Booster Club Membership Drive.

Events

Dinners, auctions, golf tournaments, fun runs, talent shows, trivia nights, car washes, pancake breakfasts. High visibility and community value, high volunteer cost. See Running a Booster Club Fundraising Event for the planning framework.

Sales at Events

Concessions, gate, spirit wear, programs and advertising, seat cushions, parking. The bread and butter of athletic boosters. Cash-heavy; read Handling Cash at Booster Club Events first.

Product Sales

Catalog sales, candy, cookie dough, discount cards, poinsettias, mattresses, coupon books. Margins vary widely; see Product Fundraisers for Booster Clubs for how to evaluate a vendor.

Raffles and Games of Chance

50/50 drawings, car and vacation raffles, calendar raffles, reverse raffles, bingo, casino nights. Legal in most states with a permit, prohibited in a few, and subject to federal reporting. Read Booster Club Raffles and the club’s state page before selling a single ticket.

Business Partnerships

Restaurant nights, scrip and gift card programs, grocery rewards, corporate sponsorships, banner programs, car dealer test-drive events. Low volunteer cost, modest return, good for keeping the club visible.

Service and Labor

Concession stand contracts at outside venues, parking at community events, gift wrapping, yard sales, recycling drives, Christmas tree pickup. Trades hours for dollars; good for teams with many families and a volunteer-hours culture.

Online and Peer-to-Peer

Crowdfunding campaigns, online auctions, virtual fun runs, “give-a-thon” days, text to give. Low fixed cost, reach beyond the school community, and registration consequences in some states; see Online Fundraising for Booster Clubs.

Planned Pages

Individual idea pages are in progress. Each will follow the template in this section and will be listed here as it is published.
